Originally built in 1907, this building is located within San Francisco’s New Montgomery/Second Street Conservation District. Since the building contributes contextually to the District, its masonry exterior, terra cotta accents, hollow metal windows, and two-story sandstone base were restored. The complete rehabilitation included seismic upgrade and new life safety, mechanical and electrical systems.
The building’s six story cast iron and marble open staircase was restored and skylighted. The main entrance and upper floor lobbies were reconfigured, allowed to remain open to the stairs and trimmed with traditional mouldings, creating a small but unique six story atrium space.
